Woody Allen, 1972
As bad as it sounds, Woody Allen is my Soulmate. It’s strange to say this about a man whose wife is his own daughter, but we resonate on the same level of humour and perversity. To clarify, Woody Allen definitely did not marry his daughter and has suffered unfairly from many lies. He is an underrated Great Artist, ahead of His times. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask) is a film that’s delightful to watch. A timeless classic. Based on shorter stories, each one different. Woody Allen himself appears in many scenes. You can’t resist him as a cockroach clown. He has the charm of a little rat. And in those outfits—this character is adorable.
Do aphrodisiacs work? The first story is amusing but also instructive. It reminds us of past realities and dark histories. The puppet is very Semitic. The whole film is full of hermetic humour, subtle and understandable only to a Jew.
What is sodomy? The second story involves a sheep. And an Armenian one at that. Neither the doctor’s nor the shepherd’s behaviour surprises me. I wouldn’t have resisted such beauty myself.
